Never compromise on your security, whether it’s your bank account information or your social media passwords.

Avoid half measures and make sure all your login credentials are protected at all costs because if they aren’t, then you might find yourself in a pickle.

Since any intruder could possibly cause you irreversible damage both reputation-wise and financially, which is why you should stay vigilant and keep an eye out for the devices you use.

Although almost all electronics such as laptops or smartphones can have their own form of security protocols such as fingerprint or face scan, Chromebooks usually follow a different form of security measure.

This is why changing its password can be a tad bit tricky and pretty much different from other standard devices.

Today we will not only discuss why such security variations exist but also shed some light on how to change passwords on Chromebook.

Chromebooks, Why Are They So Different?

Chromebooks were initially launched so they could compete with Macbooks by having compact designs with gorgeous price tags.

However, the tradeoff was that these nifty devices were assigned pretty much little to no storage capacity and hardware specifications.

Although these Chromebooks nowadays have evolved to have better and more robust hardware in terms of performance and storage, they still follow the older protocols that were allotted to them in the initial days of launch.

And What’s That?

Well, apparently there is an additional catch, and that is in order for a Chromebook to work in its optimal state, it has to be connected to the internet whenever you want to use it otherwise you have to rely on fewer applications that barely work in offline mode.

So How Does That Affect My Security Login Information?

Well as it turns out, not only do Chromebooks offer cloud storage but it also shares the same password that is affiliated with your Google account, so pretty much every google product you may use whether it’s Gmail, Duo, Maps, or photos works in conjunction with each other.

So Is That A Bad Thing?

Luckily it’s not, since all your data security is backed by the most renowned company known as Google since they have manufactured the device, so be assured you get the best possible experience with a minimal price tag.

What really comes into play is how you change the password, which will be discussed below, as now you know the logic behind the whole ordeal.

Steps On How To Change Password On Chromebook

  1. Turn on your Chromebook and head over to Google.com, and click over your profile in the upper right corner.
  2. Notice below your avatar or your profile picture, that there is a drop-down menu that will say “Manage your Google Account”
  3. Click on it and it will take you to the next set of options, find the Security tab on the left-hand side and open it.
  4. In this section, below “Signing in to Google” there is the Password option, click on it which will further lead you to another screen.
  5. Obviously, as a security measure, it would want you to log in your password to confirm it’s actually you and not somebody else that may be performing a breach.
  6. After you have entered the password, you will be welcomed with “Enter new password” where you have to write it down twice and click apply for it to take effect and change your credentials.

How to Enable 2-Step Verification

You cannot just rely on changing your password in order to maintain security and prevent breaches, sometimes Enabling 2-step Verification can prevent you from being a victim of keyloggers and other malware that may have hijacked your device silently.

Here is how you can do it,

  1. After you have changed your password, head back to the security section.
  2. And below passwords, you would find Two-Step Verification, click on it and google may ask for your number or secondary email account as a way to send Authentication codes.
  3. These authentication codes can be used to log in to your account after you have entered your password.
  4. Moreover, you will also be assigned a different set of codes which are termed “one-time use codes”, so make sure you save it somewhere safe, in case you are locked out of your account.

Bottom Line

So that’s pretty much the standard way to change a password on Chromebook, although, you can still login into your google account and change the password from any device, it is advised not to do so.

The reason behind it is that your Chromebook when not connected to the internet or when it is offline cannot sync the newer password with your google account, which means you won’t be able to login back to your Chromebook by using your newer password and will have to use the older one so the syncing process can take place.

This is why folks, I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if your password is compromised!
