Types Of USB Ports
Before we get into how to add USB ports to your laptop, let’s take a look at the different types of USB ports that you might encounter.
This is the oldest type of USB port and has a transfer speed of 12 Mbps. You’re unlikely to find this type of port on any new devices, but some older devices might still use it.
This is the most common type of USB port and has a transfer speed of 480 Mbps. Most devices these days use USB 2.0, so you’ll likely have several of these ports on your laptop already.
The newest type of USB port, USB 3.0 has a transfer speed of 4.8 Gbps. This is the fastest type of USB port available, so if you have devices that require a lot of data to be transferred quickly, look for a laptop with USB 3.0 ports.
Steps On How To Add USB Ports To Laptop
Now that we’ve gone over the different types of USB ports, let’s take a look at how to add more USB ports to your laptop.
One way to add more USB ports to your laptop is by using a USB hub. A USB hub is a device that allows you to connect multiple USB devices to your computer using a single port.
Most hubs have four or more ports, and they range in price from $10 to $30.
There Are Three Types Of USB Hubs
1. Standard USB Hubs
These hubs connect to your computer via a USB cable and provide power to low-power devices, such as mice and keyboards. They cost around $10.
2. Powered USB Hubs
These hubs connect to your computer via a USB cable and come with their power supply, which allows them to provide power to high-power devices, such as printers and external hard drives. They typically cost between $20 and $30.
3. Wireless USB Hubs
These hubs connect to your computer via a wireless connection and provide power to low-power devices, such as mice and keyboards. They typically cost between $30 and $40.
Additionally, you can also use USB docks and USB adapters to expand the number of USB ports on your laptop.
Docks are devices that allow you to connect multiple devices, such as a keyboard, mouse, and external hard drive, to your computer at the same time.
These USB docks include port such as HDMI, DVI, and Thunderbolt that helps to connect you to multiple devices at a time with just one Thunderbolt cable.
Although, they are a Tad bit more expensive than conventional USB hubs!
Word of Advice
If you decide to go with a USB hub, make sure it’s compatible with your laptop’s operating system. For example, if you have a Windows laptop, you’ll need a Windows-compatible USB hub. And if you have a Mac laptop, you’ll need a Mac-compatible USB hub.
Although for Macbooks there’s this one great option that doesn’t require any compatibility checks and it’s called the HyperDrive.
The HyperDrive is a super slim, aluminum USB-C hub that’s specifically designed for MacBooks. It has two USB 3.1 ports, one HDMI port, one microSD card slot, and one SD card slot. And it was only $99.
No matter which method you choose, adding USB ports to your laptop is a simple way to increase its functionality. With just a few extra ports, you’ll be able to connect all the devices you need without ever having to unplug anything.
